Zinc scrap is less common than copper or aluminium. It mainly comes from roofing and cladding sheet, and from die-cast parts made from mazak (a zinc-based alloy) such as door handles, taps and old carburettors.
Clean zinc sheet is usually graded above die-cast parts, which often have steel inserts and plating.

How to identify zinc
- Zinc is bluish-grey, non-magnetic and lighter than lead but heavier than aluminium.

How do I tell zinc from lead?
Lead is much heavier, softer and can be scratched with a fingernail. Zinc is harder and lighter, with a bluish tint.
Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?
No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
