Scrap Cable Prices per KG

Our scrap cables prices from Chertsey, serving Surrey and London. These are our own prices, not UK averages.

Insulated cable is priced on how much copper (or aluminium) a yard expects to recover once the insulation is removed. That recovery rate — sometimes called yield — can range widely from cable to cable.

Thick single-core cable with a lot of copper and thin insulation is worth much more per kilogram than thin data cable or household flex, where plastic makes up most of the weight.

How to identify scrap cables

  • High-grade cable: thick conductors, high copper-to-plastic ratio.
  • Low-grade cable: thin multi-core flex, data and telephone cable, cable with plugs attached.
  • Armoured (SWA) cable: copper cores inside a steel wire armour layer.
  • Aluminium-cored cable should be kept separate from copper cable.

Preparation and contamination

  • Cut off plugs, sockets and connectors.
  • Sort cable by type and thickness.
  • Never burn cable to remove insulation — it is illegal and produces toxic fumes.

What affects the price

  • Copper recovery rate.
  • Copper market reference prices.
  • Attachments and mixed cable types.

Scrap cables price FAQs

Should I strip cable myself?

For thick cable, stripping can be worthwhile because bright copper wire is a higher grade. For thin cable it is rarely worth the time. Never burn cable.

Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?

No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
