Selling scrap metal in London: what to expect
London has a dense network of licensed scrap metal sites and mobile collectors. Licences are issued by each borough council under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and every dealer must check and record a seller’s identity and pay by a traceable method rather than cash.
Why London offers can vary
- Site costs. Land and operating costs in the capital are high, and yards build these into their margin.
- Transport. Collection in central London involves congestion and Ultra Low Emission Zone costs for some vehicles, which collectors reflect in their quotes.
- Grading. Each yard grades what it sees. A well-sorted load usually earns a better grade than a mixed one.
- Volume. Trade customers bringing regular large loads may be offered different rates from one-off sellers.
Getting a fair quote
Sort metals before you go, ask which grade the yard is applying and why, and check that the weighbridge or scale reading is shown to you. Our guide to checking a scrap metal quotation covers this step by step.
London FAQs
Do I need a licence to sell scrap metal in London?
No — the licence is held by the dealer or collector. You can check a dealer’s licence on the public register held by the Environment Agency, or with the London borough council that issued it.
What affects my final price?
The grade, condition, weight and any contamination affect the final price for your metal.
What should I bring to a London scrap yard?
Valid photo ID and a proof of address. Dealers must record this under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and payment is made by bank transfer or cheque, not cash.
