Aluminium is light, so it takes a lot of it to reach a meaningful weight — but it is plentiful in window frames, car parts, cookware, ladders and drinks cans. Grading matters because alloys and coatings vary widely.
Clean extrusion such as window profile is generally valued above cast aluminium, which is valued above painted sheet and cans. Steel inserts, glass, rubber seals and plastic thermal breaks are the most common reasons for deductions.

How to identify aluminium
- Aluminium is silver-grey, light for its size and non-magnetic.
- Extrusions are long profiles with a constant cross-section, such as window and door frames.
- Cast aluminium is grainy and thicker, typical of engine blocks, gearbox casings and alloy wheels.
- Cans are thin and may be coated or painted.
Preparation and contamination
- Remove glass, rubber gaskets, steel screws and plastic thermal breaks from window frames.
- Drain oil from cast parts and remove steel bolts and inserts.
- Keep cans empty and dry; crushing saves space.
- Separate alloy wheels, as some yards price them on their own.

Aluminium price FAQs
Are aluminium window frames worth scrapping?
Yes, but expect a lower ‘dirty’ rate if glass, rubber and plastic thermal breaks are left in. Stripping them out can move the frames into a clean extrusion grade.
Why are cans priced lower than other aluminium?
Cans are very thin, coated and lacquered, and often contain liquid or debris, which reduces recoverable metal.
Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?
No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
