Scrap Brass Prices per KG

Our brass prices from Chertsey, serving Surrey and London. These are our own prices, not UK averages.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, so its value sits below copper but well above most other common scrap. Taps, valves, plumbing fittings, door furniture and ammunition casings are typical sources.

Yards grade brass mainly on cleanliness. A bag of fittings with steel spindles, rubber washers and chrome plating will be priced as mixed brass, while the same items stripped back can qualify as clean.

Mixed brass
Brass with attachments such as steel spindles, chrome plating or plastic.

How to identify brass

  • Brass is yellow to gold in colour and is not magnetic. A magnet sticking usually means steel is attached or the item is brass-plated steel.
  • Chrome-plated taps are often brass underneath; a scratch test on a hidden edge shows the yellow metal.
  • Red or pinkish alloys may be gunmetal or bronze, which some yards grade separately.

Preparation and contamination

  • Use a magnet to find and remove steel screws, spindles and handles.
  • Remove plastic, rubber washers and any lead or copper pipe stubs.
  • Keep plated items separate if a yard grades them differently.
  • Keep turnings dry and free of oil where possible.

What affects the price

  • Copper content: brass contains a high proportion of copper, so brass prices tend to move with copper markets.
  • Contamination from steel or plastic attachments.
  • Whether the material is solid fittings or turnings, which are harder to handle.

Brass price FAQs

How do I tell brass from copper?

Copper is reddish-brown and brass is yellow-gold. Both are non-magnetic. If unsure, keep them separate and ask the yard to grade them.

Why is my brass being priced as mixed?

Usually because of attachments — steel spindles, plastic, rubber or plating. Removing them can move the load into a clean brass grade.

Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?

No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
