Scrap Steel Prices
Our steel prices from Chertsey, serving Surrey and London. These are our own prices, not UK averages.
Steel is the most common scrap by weight but one of the lowest-value per kilogram. For that reason it is usually quoted per tonne, and small quantities may only be worth a few pounds — or may be accepted free of charge.
Heavy, thick steel such as beams and plate is generally worth more than thin, light steel like white goods and sheet, because it is denser and easier to melt with less contamination.

Steel grades we track
- Heavy melting steel
- Thick structural steel, beams and plate over roughly 6 mm.
- Light iron / mixed steel
- Thin sheet, white goods and mixed light ferrous scrap.
How to identify steel
- Steel is magnetic. A strong magnet sticking firmly is the quickest test.
- Heavy melting steel (HMS) is thick structural material, typically over about 6 mm.
- Light iron or mixed steel covers thin sheet, appliances, bikes and similar items.
Preparation and contamination
- Remove non-metal parts — wood, plastic, rubber and concrete.
- Appliances containing refrigerants (fridges, freezers) are handled under separate rules and may be refused or charged for.
- Keep heavy and light steel apart if you have a significant quantity of each.
What affects the price
- Thickness and density of the material.
- Transport costs — collection can outweigh the value of small loads.
- Steel market demand, which is influenced by construction and export markets.

Steel price FAQs
Why is steel priced per tonne?
Per-kilogram values for steel are small, so per-tonne figures are easier to compare. Our tables show both: per tonne = price per kg × 1,000.
Is it worth taking a small amount of steel to a yard?
Often only if you are already taking higher-value metals. Check whether the yard has a minimum weight before travelling.
Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?
No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
