Scrap Stainless Steel Prices per KG
Our stainless steel prices from Chertsey, serving Surrey and London. These are our own prices, not UK averages.
Stainless steel is worth considerably more than ordinary steel because it contains chromium and nickel. Sinks, catering equipment, kitchen worktops, tube and fasteners are common sources.
The two most traded grades are 304 (also called 18/8) and 316, which also contains molybdenum and is used in marine and chemical settings. 316 generally commands a higher rate.
Stainless steel prices
| Metal / grade | Price |
|---|---|
18/8 stainless solids | £0.60 – £0.70 per kg |
316 stainless solids | £1.00 – £1.20 per kg |
Final price depends on the grade, condition and weight of your metal.

How to identify stainless steel
- Common 304 and 316 stainless are largely non-magnetic, though cold-worked areas such as bends can be slightly magnetic.
- A strongly magnetic ‘stainless’ item is likely a 400-series ferritic grade, which yards usually price lower.
- Grade stamps (e.g. ‘304’, ‘316’, ‘A2’, ‘A4’) on fittings and fasteners help confirm the alloy.
Preparation and contamination
- Separate magnetic stainless from non-magnetic stainless.
- Remove plastic, wood and ordinary steel brackets.
- Keep 316 separate from 304 if you can identify it.
What affects the price
- Nickel and molybdenum market prices.
- Correct grade identification — yards may test with an analyser.
- Contamination with ordinary steel.

Stainless steel price FAQs
How can I tell 304 from 316 stainless steel?
They look identical. Markings help, otherwise a yard with an XRF analyser can test it. If unsure, it will usually be graded as 304.
Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?
No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
